The Carte Vitale is the Social Security card, mandatory to get medical reimbursement.
To get it, you first need to request the Social Security number to your Caisse Primaire d’ Assurance Maladie (CPAM).
In the Social Security number request form you have to submit the following documents: copy of identity card or passport, birth certificate, first French payroll, proof of domicile in France, your French bank account (known as “RIB”) and the original document of “choix du médecin traitant”. Meanwhile, a provisional Social Security number will be assigned to you.
Do not forget to ask for the “Fueille de soins” to the health professional assisting you, it is required to be reimbursed while you wait for the Carte Vitale.
If you are European, you will receive the Carte Vitale at home between 2 and 4 months from its request. Otherwise, it will take longer.
